January 2005
Dear Friends,

The Pride Park Renovation Committee is so very grateful to every one who has supported this project. Your feedback, donations, and participation in all that we do are important to its success. You have helped raise more than 70K and we thank you for supporting a safe place for our children to play, learn, and explore.

In our ongoing effort to communicate, we hope you find this summary informative.

Unfortunately, Pride Park will be torn down no later than May/June 2005. To this point, it has been our philosophy to provide playground fundraisers that offer you something in return for your donation but the renovation can only begin when the rest of the needed funds are raised. We still must raise another 55K to re-build the park correctly and safely. Your donation is a long term investment to the development of a child.

As you may know, research has found that playgrounds are essential in the development of the physical and mental strength in children. They learn cooperation, problem solving, and leadership skills while enhancing their imaginations. Playgrounds are not only vital for children, but also for communities and gatherings.

Why does Pride Park need to be renovated?

Safety The biggest concern is safety. This community park and elementary playground will be torn down in June 2005. Although once a splendid playground, this precious space has deteriorated substantially. The current equipment has deteriorated, and the structures and surface do not meet current safety standards. Some existing structures must be removed and replaced. We must resurface the area for it to meet current ADA safety standards. The area no longer has the sufficient surface, drainage and shade, to support the use of the playground.

Building a Community Pride Park is town property; however, the Major Edwards Elementary school has the first right to use the playground during the hours of 10:45-2:45 for recess. Play is an important part of learning, and it can be disappointing for any child to go to the playground and find it closed. It is the Committee's goal to provide a separate, fenced in area within the park for all-day use for West Boylston Residents while school IS in session!

How can you help?

Buy a Brick! But hurry…brick orders are due by May 30, 2005 for planning purposes. The bricks will likely be laid spring 2006 to allow the ground to settle first. We invite you to purchase a brick bearing your name, family's name, or the message of your choice for $50 or $100. Select an art symbol for an additional $10.00! Print out a form and send it in.

Make a Straight Donation. Just imagine… if we received a donation from every one of the 2,700 households we may be able to rebuild just in time for the 2005-2006 school year! contact us.

Volunteer for Demolition or Community Build! YOU ARE NEEDED… Whether you have equipment to lend, a specific skill set (carpentry for the pavilion or masonry for the bricks!) or can join for the demolition/re-building, coordinating volunteers, donate water and food, help, watching children, add some muscle or just a hand to help hold something up or together… We would appreciate an afternoon, a day, or multiple days! Help put the “Community” into the Community Pride Park this summer! contact us.

Help Sponsor a Particular Piece or Portion of Equipment within the Pride Park. Based on a minimum donation of $1,500 and depending on your donation amount, you can now purchase or help purchase a piece or portion of equipment pieces, fencing, covered pavilion, benches, or picnic tables at the park – with your name, community group, or company name on it! Please contact Lynn Rochelle at 508.835.6097 as soon as possible - this is a first come first serve basis. All sponsorships include an engraved 8X8" brick and more! contact us.
